Norfolk State volleyball team breaks 10-game losing streak with back-to-back MEAC wins

The Norfolk State University volleyball team took down the University of Maryland Eastern shore and Delaware State University this weekend to break a ten-game losing streak. The Spartans overcame a two-set deficit against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Gills Gymnasium to earn their first win of the season.

Senior outside hitter Carla Hernandez had a standout night with 12 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior middle blocker Paola Maradei protected the net with a career-high of eight blocks. Senior libero Nicole Rodriguez stood out, keeping the game in front of her with 17 digs.

The Spartans continued their MEAC conference campaign on the road in Dover, Del. on Sunday as they took on Delaware State.
The Lady Spartans aimed to continue their momentum and took down Delaware State in three sets. The win cemented the first time since 2013 that the Spartans held a 2-0 record in MEAC play.

Junior outside hitter Shonte Seale led the team with 13 kills and achieved 1,000 total career kills. Rodriguez was in command of the defense, tallying with 10 digs. Freshman setter Sydney McCree put up a strong performance as she piled up 33 assists with eight digs and four aces. McCree’s performance clinched her second MEAC Rookie of the Week honor of the 2022 season.

The Spartans will continue MEAC conference play this week as they will return to Gills Gymnasium on Friday to face the defending MEAC champions of Howard University.
