Spartans place 14th at USBC sectional meet

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The No. 21 Norfolk State bowling team finished 14th over the weekend at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Sectionals at the AMF Parkway Lanes.

The Spartans reached as high as ninth among the 16 teams in the field after putting together a strong second session. The sectional was divided into four sessions held between Saturday and Sunday. Each session consisted of 16 Baker games.

Norfolk State ended the first session in 13th place with a pinfall of 2,748, an average of 171.8. NSU got hot late in the second session with a pair of 200 games, bumping its total to 2,861 for an average of 178.8. That pushed the Spartans into ninth with a 5,609 total after Saturday’s play.

The third session, and the first on Sunday, was not kind to them, as they posted a total of just 2,217 for those 16 games to fall all the way to 15th. NSU did finish strong, posting a pair of 200 games early on and averaging 176.8 in the final session to ultimately place 14th with a pinfall of 10,654.

There were four sectionals held this weekend at various places in the country. The top four teams from each one will comprise the 16-team field for the Intercollegiate Team Championship in April. At NSU’s section, Webber International, Maryland Eastern Shore, Emmanuel College and Wright State advanced to the championship from NSU’s sectional.

The USBC sectionals and championship consist of both NCAA and non-NCAA bowling programs. Aside from NSU and Maryland Eastern Shore, the only other MEAC team to compete was Delaware State, which also advanced to the championship after finishing in the top 4 at the Illinois sectional.

NSU will next gear up for the MEAC Championship, being held at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake for the fifth year in a row. This season’s conference championship runs from March 23-25.
