Fontaine named Vice President for University Advancement

Norfolk State University President and CEO Eddie N. Moore, Jr. has selected Dr. Deborah C. Fontaine as the university’s Vice President for University Advancement. She provides leadership and administrative oversight for the departments of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, Communications and Marketing, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Fundraising, Development Services, University Events and the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center.

Prior to this appointment, Fontaine had been interim Vice President for University Advancement since September 2013. During that time, she spearheaded three successful I AM NSU Annual Campaigns, raising $11 million in gifts and pledges from more than 11,000 donors over the 2014, 2015, and 2016 campaign cycles.

Fontaine joined Norfolk State in 2010, serving as Chief of Staff to the President. She previously held administrative positons as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Elizabeth City State University; Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning at Thomas Nelson Community College; and Vice Provost and Campus Executive Administrator at the University of the Virgin Islands. In addition, she held teaching positions at Central Michigan, Elizabeth City State, Duke, Christopher Newport and Hampton universities.

Prior to joining the academy, Fontaine held several directorships at Verizon Communications, Inc. in Philadelphia. She earned a Ph.D. in Management from Walden University and received her MBA and B.S. in business administration from Hampton University. Additionally, she holds a graduate certificate in higher education leadership from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Fontaine serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), the Urban League of Hampton Roads, and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Currently, she is a member of the 2017 Class of CIVIC Leadership Institute.
