NORFOLK, Va. – The new-look Norfolk State men’s cross country team opens its season Thursday evening at the University of Virginia Duals.

“We expect to have a very competitive team,” head coach Kenneth Giles said. “We really like the athletes we are going to put out on the course.”

Haileyesus Demsie, Desmond Fogg, Tomas Fantaye and Joseph Wanene are the four key returners from last year’s team that finished third at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.

Demsie, looks to improve on a great season when led the Spartans with the fastest time in every meet last year and he earned his first career All-MEAC cross country honor.

Fogg will be looked to for his experience and leadership, with such a young Spartans team. He has finished in the top 20 Performers List for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, each of the last two seasons.

Fantaye and Wanene finished in 26:54 and 26:59, respectively, at the Christopher Newport Invitational last season, which are personal records for both.

The Spartans welcome three freshmen: Tyreece Huff, Festus Bett and Felix Kiprotich to the roster, as well as two transfers: Anteneh Girma (VCU) and Ronald Korir (Eastern Kentucky University).

“I think it is one of the strongest teams from top to bottom that we have ever produced,” Giles said. “We have an outstanding recruiting class, which will add depth.”

Huff, won the District of Columbia Athletic Association Cross Country Championships with a 5K time of, 17:42. Bett’s personal record time in the 5K is, 14:24, while Kiprotich’s is 14:22.

Girma, finished 68th overall at the 2015 A-10 Championship, with a time of, 25:59, while Korir earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors with a ninth-place finish in a time of, 24:40.9, at the 2014 OVC Championships, which qualified him for the NCAA Championship. He set his personal record at the Christopher Newport Invitational, with a time of, 25:29.

The women’s cross country team will open up at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Sept. 17.
