Social Security worker pleads guilty to stealing benefits

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Social Security employee has pleaded guilty to stealing $56,000 in benefits from recipients’ bank accounts.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release that 35-year-old Sophia Dix of Newport News pleaded guilty to wire fraud Monday, Apr 25,  in federal court in Norfolk.

Prosecutors say Dix, a customer service representative, has access to beneficiary information, including bank accounts. Authorities say from April 2014 through August 2015, she rerouted more $56,000 in other persons’ benefits to her own bank account.

Dix faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at sentencing on July 21.
