DOVER, Del. – Austin Bentley hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give host Delaware State a 6-5 win over Norfolk State in the teams’ MEAC series finale on Monday, April 11, afternoon at Soldier Field.
Bentley’s hit off Spartan reliever Michael Parmentier scored pinch runner Jaylen Zielecki from third base and helped the Hornets (6-25, 6-5 MEAC North) avoid a three-game sweep.
The Spartans (13-15, 7-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 5-4 entering the seventh, but could not hold on.
NSU plated three runs in the fourth inning. The Spartans started the inning with four straight singles, capped by RBI hits from Chase Anderson and Tony Leite. Justin Lee’s fielder’s choice grounder made it 3-0 later in the inning.
DSU got a run in the bottom of the fourth on Devin Beverly’s RBI double, then added three more in the fifth to take the lead. A two-out NSU error prolonged the inning, and Darnell Maisonet’s two-run double tied the game at 3-all. Maisonet then scored on another Spartan miscue.
The Spartans regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Three straight singles, by Leite, Chris Ford and Lee, knotted the score at 4-all. Ford then scored on a two-out DSU error to give the Spartans the lead at 5-4.
But the Hornets tied the game at 5-all in the seventh on a two-out single by Bentley, who then won the game for DSU two innings later.
Maisonet, who began the game as DSU’s designated hitter, moved to the mound in the sixth and earned the win by pitching 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
Cooper Jones (2-2), the second of NSU’s three pitchers, took the loss as the winning run was charged to his line. He allowed three hits in 1.1 innings of work, striking out two. Starter Devin Hemmerich went 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, but just one earned, to go with seven strikeouts.
Leite and Angel Rosario had two hits each for NSU and Lee had two RBI. Bentley went 4-for-5 and Maisonet 2-for-5 for DSU.
The Spartans are scheduled to play a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday, April 12, at VCU.
