198 displaced after fire at Norfolk apartment complex

Norfolk Va, (AP) — Nearly 200 people have been displaced after a fire at an apartment complex near Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

Local media outlet report the fire happened Monday, Mar 28, at The District Apartments. A total of 198 were displaced. No injuries were reported.

Fire rescue spokesman Bill Tull says responding firefighters noticed smoke on the fourth floor. He says a small pan of food had caught fire, activating the sprinkler system.

Residents were evacuated from the building. Officials called in to evaluate the building’s electrical system and the extent of water damage.

Jalen Ford, maintenance technician for The District, says residents were either being moved to vacant rooms in the complex or sent to a hotel. Ford says he didn’t know when residents would be able to return to their rooms.
