Portsmouth principal charged with assaulting student

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A Portsmouth middle school principal faces a misdemeanor charge of assaulting a student.

Portsmouth police Detective Misty Holley told media outlets that W.E. Waters Middle School Principal Alice Graham was issued a summons charging her with assault and battery on Tuesday.

Holley says the 14-year-old student took out the charge against the 48-year-old Graham on Monday through a magistrate.

Holley says the student told the magistrate the incident occurred on Oct. 21. She didn’t have details.

Graham was not at the school on Thursday. She didn’t respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment on the charge. It wasn’t clear whether she has an attorney.
