PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Redshirt junior Fawzia Kheir and senior Rachel Webb earned top-10 finishes on Saturday to lead the Norfolk State women’s cross country team to a third-place finish in its season-opening meet, the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational.
UMES took first place in the meet with 29 points. Morgan State was second with 41, and NSU was next with 102. Delaware State (fourth), Coppin State (fifth) and University of District of Columbia (sixth) rounded out the competition.
Kheir, a long- and middle-distance standout who joined the Spartans’ program in January, paced NSU in her first cross country meet with the team. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 16 seconds to take sixth place overall. Webb, the Spartans’ lone returning All-MEAC runner, was seventh in 20:48.98.
The Spartans are off next weekend before their squad will be split between two meets the weekend of Sept. 18-19. NSU will have runners participating in the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary on Sept. 18, and others at the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational on Sept. 19.
