NSU student dies in drowning accident

23-year-old Jae’Quan Mabry, a Norfolk State University student, died in a drowning accident in Norfolk on Sunday, Aug. 23.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call for a drowning victim in the 400 block of College Place.  Upon arrival, police found two men in the Elizabeth River that appeared to be in distress. One of the men was yelling for help and the other man was unresponsive.  Three Norfolk Police Officers jumped into the water and were able to pull them both out.  The Officers attempted rescue efforts on Mabry until Norfolk Paramedics arrived and took over.

Both men were subsequently transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where Mabry died.  The second man admitted in stable condition.

Mabry, 23, of Hampton, was a junior general business major. He was a member of NSU’s League of Extraordinary Men and also served on the Student Activities Board.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 5405 Roanoke Avenue in Newport News.  More information about services can be found here:
