Va. woman sentenced for cashing fraudulent tax refund checks

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk woman who cashed more than $2 million in fraudulent income tax refund checks has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison.

Thirty-four-year-old Tanya Evans was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Norfolk for her December plea to conspiring to defraud the government.

Court documents show a check-cashing business noticed in 2013 that Evans had cashed more than $2 million in U.S. Treasury checks.

An IRS investigation determined she had cashed 640 such checks.
