Navy reassigns security officer following fatal shooting

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy has reassigned an officer who ran security operations at Naval Station Norfolk after a civilian got on base in 2014 and killed a sailor aboard a ship.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1DHyn5A ) the move was made by Rear Adm. Rick Williamson. The identity of the lieutenant who was removed from the job was not released.

The disciplinary measure came after an investigation revealed a series of security lapses that allowed a civilian truck driver to drive on base without a reason to be there. The driver eventually parked his truck and walked onto the USS Mahan, where he disarmed a sailor who was standing guard and shot another.

Williamson says he agrees with the investigation that a more experienced officer was needed to run security.
